  • Overview

    The Commercial Underwriter - Program  is responsible for the evaluation, selection, acceptance, rejection, pricing and servicing of commercial insurance new policies within accepted company procedures and guidelines. Maintains effective agency relationships and manages agency profitability within assigned territories. 


    • Analyze commercial lines accounts to make decisions based on individual risk characteristics, exposure analysis, hazard recognition and controls.
    • Determine class fit of small business accounts across our targeted commercial lines of business. Targeted commercial lines of business are primarily Workers Compensation and BOP products.
    • Determine plan of action for renewals utilizing loss control inspections, loss experience reports and third party data providers.
    • Evaluate pricing and coverage to ensure premiums charged are commensurate with the exposure based on company procedures and guidelines.
    • Assist the Regional Underwriting Vice Presidents in resolving agency disputes or problems.
    • Manage book of business to achieve profitability goals utilizing reporting tools and daily correspondences with claims, loss control, and distribution partners.
    • Build productive and positive relationships with assigned agents.
    • Manage facultative reinsurance placement based on corporate guidelines.
    • Work closely with, and provide direction to, underwriting assistants across all aspects of the underwriting process.


    • Bachelor’s degree or related work experience in a similar environment
    • 3-5 year(s) experience in multiline underwriting
    • Must have completed and/or be participating in technical insurance course programs
    • Knowledge of property and casualty underwriting procedures and policies in addition to worker’s compensation, BOP, package, monoline auto, monoline GL, and umbrella
    • Knowledge and understanding of ISO/CLM computer programs and Microsoft Office Applications
    • Strong analytical ability and organizational skills. In addition, must have a demonstrated ability to lead, plan and work well with others
    • Experience in and ability to handle commercial risks which generate a premium level up to $150,000.
