Overview

The Complex Account Unit in our Workers’ Compensation Corporate Underwriting department is seeking a Senior Underwriter to join our CA and Western States team. The newly established Complex Account Unit is dedicated to underwriting and managing WC accounts that fall outside of regional underwriting authority based on account size, complexity, hazards and exposures, service requirements, agency profile, etc. These high-profile accounts offer the team significant exposure to c-suite level executives both internal and external.

 

The Complex Account Unit delivers significant value to our brokers by providing them with underwriting capability for their workers’ compensation insurance needs that are best addressed on an individual risk basis.

 

With this opportunity, you will underwrite and manage a portfolio of large, challenging and unique accounts in accordance with AmTrust’s WC guidelines, strategy and profitability standards. The person in this position is responsible for new business development, renewal retention, risk analysis and assessment, pricing negotiation, and account maintenance in order to maintain and develop a profitable portfolio.

 

Position requires advanced risk assessment skills with minimum of 10 years industry experience, 7+ years in Workers’ Compensation.

 

Maintains a solid understanding of AmTrust’s mission, vision, and values. Upholds the standards of the AmTrust organization.

Responsibilities

  1. Build and maintain a solid flow of new business opportunities, identifying opportunities for growth within new and existing production sources. Position has direct responsibility for broker development and management within a book of business.
  2. Develop risk pricing by analyzing exposures, claims experience, utilizing pricing tools and worksheets, comparison to similar risks, as well as experience in underwriting exposures pertaining to individual risks, for new accounts within assigned portfolio and authority level.
  3. Consistently achieve budgeted financial results (premium, loss ratio, retention, commissions, pricing, new business, premium collection, and expense management) as established for individual portfolios.
  4. Supports the achievement of continued profitability, growth and/or operational efficiencies for a product line through assessment of competitor product offerings and market appetite
  5. Remain current on legal and regulatory changes, claim development and emerging exposures/issues to contribute to unit product development and portfolio decisions.
  6. May take lead responsibility for position papers for emerging exposures/ issues when assigned.
  7. Identify and take corrective action and/or collaborate with the appropriate area within the organization based on individual risk characteristics identified through broker reviews, large loss analysis, risk control, etc.
  8. Coaches, leads and develops underwriters and directs the development of pricing and associated exposure training.
  9. Keeps current with market trends and demands.
  10. Performs other functionally related duties as assigned.

Qualifications

Required:

  • 10+ years industry experience, 7+ years in workers’ compensation
  • BA/BS degree strongly preferred, or equivalent in experience
  • Knowledge of workers’ compensation, classification, pricing and coverage options with adherence to applicable statutory compliance issues and corporate guidelines.
  • Able to understand and execute to strategic priorities including; pricing strategy, agent strategy, rate strategy, underwriting appetite.
  • Strong knowledge of workers’ compensation external market and demonstrated marketing and business development experience within the agency distribution channel.
  • Advanced analytical skills to interpret business information drawn from multiple sources to take critical account decisions regarding quality of risk.
  • Excellent written and oral communication skills and ability to interact effectively with all levels in the organization
  • Keen influencing and negotiation skills are essential
  • Strong computer skills (Excel|Word|SharePoint) with demonstrated high accuracy output.
  • Ability and desire to travel up to 25% of the time within the assigned territory

 

Preferred:

  • CPCU or other related Insurance Designation(s) preferred

The expected salary range for this role is $120,000.00-$170,000.00
