Overview

The Senior Underwriter will be responsible for the underwriting and servicing of new business for an assigned territory. In this role, you will maintain effective relationships with agency contacts to ensure accurate information is gathered for risk evaluation and provide consultation on company product and coverage capabilities that positively impacts risk selection. Enable profitable growth with assigned agencies including periodic profitability reviews and the implementation of profit improvement actions. Maintain a solid understanding of AmTrust’s mission, vision, and values. Uphold the standards of the AmTrust organization.

Responsibilities

  1. Develop strong business relationships with key agents and provide underwriting guidance to the agents.
  2. Write and retain a profitable book of business through solid risk analysis, pricing and servicing. Maintains compliance with state filings and adheres to corporate underwriting and pricing guidelines. Operate within written authority grant and makes referrals to Home Office Underwriting as required
  3. Collaborates closely with territory team. Keep peers and Territory Management informed of all issues and activity
  4. In collaboration with Territory Management, develop and implement the territory business plan and share accountability with team in meeting territory goals
  5. Select, price, and develop coverage terms for commercial lines accounts to achieve profitable underwriting results and assist with providing leadership, support, and coaching for the underwriting function
  6. Manage a territory of independent agents to ensure that profitability and growth objectives for the company are being met
  7. Review new business applications to evaluate the degree of risk involved, review applications for completeness (contact agents for missing/incomplete information), and accept or decline risks based on the company's underwriting policies
  8. Maintain and establish a good working relationship with agents and communicate underwriting decisions to agents.
  9. Collaborate with the team to develop, manage and maintain outside client relationships, which will include traveling in the territory to meet with agents and producers. Actively plan and participate in industry events as required such as but not limited to agency or association conventions
  10. Provides professional, timely and courteous communication and service to external clients and cross departmental staff to successfully resolve issues pertaining to policyholders and territory producers
  11. Provides the pertinent information and guidance to support staff required to process coverage requests in accordance with service guidelines
  12. Collaborates with territory team on reports and update databases as required
  13. Other job duties may include developing underwriting guidelines for your company and training new staff

Qualifications

Required:

  • Bachelor’s Degree with a background in insurance or equivalent experience
  • At least 5 years of underwriting experience at a company or agency level with a minimum of 5 years of underwriting experience should be in the commercial lines sector of insurance
  • Demonstration of self-development through the attainment of professional insurance designations, CPCU, ARM, PLU, etc.
  • CPCU or CIC designation preferred, or the equivalent combination of education and experience
  • Ability to create business opportunities by demonstrating excellent underwriting skills and product knowledge. Must possess a value-added service mentality
  • Demonstrated experience with and expert technical knowledge of commercial casualty, property, automobile, workers compensation and umbrella insurance coverage and risk selection, methods and pricing.
  • Demonstrated ability to interpret and analyze data and make an informed, calculated risk decision
  • The expectation is this employee will travel 2 to 3 days per week to visit agents in the designated territory.

Preferred:

  • 10 years of commercial line property and casualty experience
  • Ability to make sound contributions to tactical and strategic planning
  • Ability to train, coach and mentor individuals of various backgrounds within area of expertise
